Counselling Cards £19

Emotional development and psychological change occur as a natural part of life, through age and experience.  However, sometimes this process is not necessarily a positive one and you may find that you’re struggling to cope.  So, it’s time to take control and learn how to manage you

Of course, in order to learn to be the best that you can be, it is helpful to know what you need to learn.  Academic research has recently established in detail what a person might look like if they were a 'fully-functioning’ person.  This information has been written as a set of items, arranged by category, and presented as a card exercise.  This enables you to define the areas you need to work on, either in therapy, or on your own.

The categories are:

  • Coping with the basics of my life

  • Being me

  • Coping with life’s difficulties

  • Making relationships work

  • Understanding myself

  • Managing my feelings

  • How I feel about myself

  • Getting the most out of my life

An example if one of the items is: I accept the things in my life that I can’t control, (a. I accept that life is sometimes chaotic and complex, and b. I don’t aim for perfection unnecessarily.)

Working through some, (or all) of the items will enable you to identify those areas of your life which you need to learn to manage.  And, since identifying the problem is half the battle, you will then be on course for better well-being.  Talking the results through with a counsellor may then be the best course of action, but sometimes, just identifying the problem alone is enough, and these cards will enable you do that.

Therapist Resource Pack £28

If counselling is viewed as a learning process, then knowing what is to be learned would be helpful.   Academic research has recently established in detail how a client may present if they were 'fully-functioning'.  Therefore, knowing what success looks like gives you and your client the opportunity to identify areas to work on.  This picture of a fully-functioning individual - based on the work of Carl Rogers, has been written as a set of items, arranged by category, and presented here as a card exercise.

The categories are:

  • Coping with the basics of my life

  • Being me

  • Coping with life’s difficulties

  • Making relationships work

  • Understanding myself

  • Managing my feelings

  • How I feel about myself

  • Getting the most out of my life

The exercise is designed to narrow choices to one specific item, enabling the client to organise jumbled thoughts.  So, if your client is unsure what to focus on, or your process becomes ‘stuck’, the cards can clarify thinking.  The Learning Plan is a document which accompanies the client cards, and facilitates goals to be committed to paper.

Therapist Cards

The Therapist Counselling Cards have the same items as the basic Counselling Cards that are designed for clients.  However, the difference is additional information on the back of the cards explaining the items in more complex counselling terms.  These can be referred to in the session should the client need more information.  So for example, one item is: I can change by adding new information into my view of myself.  Then a more detailed explanation is given on the back of the card: Is open to integrating new experiences into the self-concept without denial or distortion. Rectifies inconsistencies between thoughts and reality. Is not defensive.

Your client may wish to work with their own basic pack at home and then discuss their thoughts with you in the session.  Alternatively, you can work together with your client using only the Therapist cards.

The Client Questionnaire lists all the items on the cards in one document, allowing clients to work through the set as a whole if they prefer.

The Therapist Resource Pack includes a set of Therapist Cards, a Client Learning Plan and a Client Questionnaire.  Additional copies of the plan and questionnaire can be ordered separately.
